There are slight changes, and many are effective.The bathroom now has a gorgeous, otherworldly white glow, and though the "shower scene" in Hitchcock's classic is one of the most daring twists in cinema, one can't argue that the more controlled slashing and seeing red blood (instead of dark gray) works nicely. Gus Van Sant (he of "Good Will Hunting" fame) decided to do a shot-for-shot reproduction, "like making a copy of the Mona Lisa." To his credit, he had realistic expectations, adding that it would make "an interesting pop piece." Suffice to say, he's right, his "vision" (if you can call it that) is entertaining, interesting and little else. While not a landmark piece, it remains one of the most influential works of cinema, and it is this film that someone had the chutzpah to remake, literally. ![]() Though critics tend to cite "Vertigo" as Alfred Hitchcock's best, recent American Film Institute polling has "Psycho" as the highest- rated work from the master director.
